MILWAUKEE, Wis. (naccsports.org) --- The 13th edition of the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference's "Cans Across the Conference" effort concluded recently with the league's 13 member institutions collecting 50,536 items.
2018 marks the second consecutive year the NACC has eclipsed the 50,000 mark. The league collected a record 55,188 items in 2017.
Alverno College topped this year's standings with 18,721 items to retain the traveling trophy for the ninth straight year. Edgewood College collected 11,675 followed by Dominican University with 9,405 to round out the top three.
Since the conference's inception in 2006, the members of the NACC Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) has organized "Cans Across the Conference", doing something together as a conference that helps in each institution's respective community.
SAAC annually organizes the canned food drive as a community service competition amongst the 13 institutions in the conference. Each campus SAAC collects cans and other non-perishable items at their school during October and November to benefit a local charity.
In addition to food items, one dollar donated equals two cans, and toiletries (shampoo, soap, toothpaste, deodorant, etc.) are also counted.
