ROCKFORD, Ill. - The Rockford University athletic department is excited to announcing the hiring of Michael Lanera as the initial head coach for the recently-announced RU men's volleyball program. The Regents are set to join the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference and begin competition during the 2019-20 academic year.
"We are excited to have Coach Lanera join our department to lead our men's volleyball program," RU Director of Athletics Jason Mulligan commented. "The search committee was impressed with Michael's preparation, passion and dedication. His connections in the Rockford community will benefit the program right away, and we believe he is ready to hit the ground running and fill the roster with quality student-athletes."
Lanera enters the collegiate ranks with extensive local coaching experience at both the high school and club levels. Coach Lanera spent the last four seasons coaching the boys' varsity team at Auburn High School in Rockford. During his time at the helm of the boys program, Lanera steadily improved the team and was named the NIC-10 Coach of the Year for the 2018 season. In addition to his high school coaching duties, Lanera also spent two years coaching at the club level. Lanera coached both of the boys' 18-year-old teams at the Rockford Volleyball Club.
"I would like to thank Jason Mulligan and the entire search committee for giving me the opportunity to be the head men's volleyball coach at Rockford University," Coach Lanera stated. "Boys' volleyball has grown significantly in recent years in the Rockford area, and there are a lot of talented young men looking to continue playing at the collegiate level. I feel confident and am excited that we will be able to recruit some outstanding student-athletes to Rockford University and build a strong program for many years to come."
