ROCKFORD, Illinois -- Rockford University is pleased to announce the hiring of Morgan Goetschel as its next head coach for the men's and women's cross country and track & field programs. Goetschel brings a wealth of knowledge with him after having competed and coached at the collegiate level as well holding a USTF Level 1 Certification.
"We are excited to have Morgan join the Rockford University Athletic Department as our next head cross country and track & field coach," RU Director of Athletics Jason Mulligan said. "Coach Goetschel has Division III playing experience and knowledge of the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference from his time as a student-athlete at Aurora University. He is also very well connected in the state of Illinois through his time as the head coach at Judson University. We look forward to him raising the Regents cross country and track and field program to new heights."
Goetschel joins the Regents after spending the previous four years coaching at the NAIA level including stints at both Judson University and Central Methodist University. Most recently, Goetschel spent the last two seasons as the Head Cross Country Coach and Assistant Track & Field Coach at Judson University. Over the past two years, his cross country teams finished no lower than sixth at the conference championships with the men's team placing fourth last year. His track and field teams also performed well with the men placing in the top six and the women finishing in the top seven at both the Indoor & Outdoor CCAC Championships. Over the past four seasons, Goetschel has coached twenty-one NAIA National Qualifiers, five NAIA All-Americans and one NAIA National Champion.
Prior to entering the coaching ranks, Goetschel competed at the NCAA Division III level as a member of the cross country and track & field teams at Aurora University. During his four years in a Spartan uniform, the Aurora cross country program steadily improved in the NACC from a sixth place finish at the conference championships in 2009 to winning a NACC Title in 2012 during his senior year. Goetschel was also a member of a steadily improving AU indoor track and field team that won just the program's second ever NACC Championship in 2013 during his senior year.
"I am excited to get started at Rockford University and would like to thank the administration for giving me this opportunity," Coach Goetschel stated. "I believe a great opportunity exists here for me to continue to build a program that alumni can be proud to have been a part of. Coach Ekberg did a great job laying the foundation, and now it is my job to continue to move the program forward in a positive direction. It is my goal to grow and continue to build on that foundation as well as to help make the program more competitive in the NACC and in the region."
The Rockford University men's and women's cross country teams are set to begin their seasons on Friday, August 31 at the Beloit Opener. The meet will take place at the Kielselburg Forest Preserve in Roscoe, Ill., with a scheduled start time of 4:00 PM.
