AURORA, Ill. (naccsports.org) --- Benedictine University placed three runners in the top 13, including individual champion Marcos Garcia, to capture the program's first Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) men's cross country title Saturday at Oakhurst Forest Preserve.
In addition to three in the top 13, all five of the Eagles' scoring runners came across in the top 25 overall, leaving them with 65 points and a seven-point edge over runner-up MSOE. The Raiders had three runners finish in the top-10 (6-7-8). Concordia Wisconsin edged Aurora, 91-94, for third place, while Wisconsin Lutheran placed fifth as a team. NACC newcomer Illinois Tech took sixth with 129 points, followed by Edgewood (176), Concordia Chicago (221), Dominican (255), Rockford (267) and Lakeland (272).
Garcia and Concordia Wisconsin freshman Wesley Schiek were neck-and-neck throughout the race with Garcia pulling away in the final stretch to complete the 8-kilometer course in 24 minutes, 44.51 seconds. Schiek stopped the clock just over four seconds later in 22:48.71. Garcia's time set a new championship record, erasing the time of 25:22.8 posted by Wisconsin Lutheran's Chase Robles on this same course in 2014.
CUW's Craig Reese came home third in 25:14.88, followed by Benedictine's Joe Chavez (25:34.96), Aurora's Brandon Estrada (25:46.90) and the MSOE trio of Nolan Kozinski (25:49.61), Jesse Lambrecht (25:53.94) and Blake Bostwick (25:56.66). Wisconsin Lutheran's Chris Krahn (25:58.67) was ninth, while Aurora's Carl Way (26:04.31) came across in 10th place.
At the post-championship awards ceremony, Shieck was recognized as the league's Runner of the Year and Freshman of the Year after his runner-up finish.
Garcia, also a freshman, was not eligible for all-conference or other major awards due to NACC policies enacted earlier this fall related to Benedictine's since aborted transition to NCAA Division II.
MSOE head coach Bill Massoels, in his first season at the helm, was recognized by his peers as the 2018 NACC Men's Cross Country Coach of the Year.
In addition, the top 15 eligible individuals (places 2-16) received All-NACC recognition.
