MILWAUKEE, Wis. (naccsports.org) --- The Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) has announced its major awards and all-conference team for the 2022 women's tennis season.
Concordia University Wisconsin senior
Ricki Budewitz (Watertown, Wis.) was named NACC Player of the Year, while Lakeland University's
Olivia Heling (West Bend, Wis.) was named NACC Freshman of the Year. Concordia University Wisconsin, led by head coach
Steve Anschutz, was recognized as the NACC Coaching Staff of the Year.
All honors are selected by a vote of the league's head coaches.
NACC Player of the Year --- Ricki Budewitz, Concordia University Wisconsin
Budewitz went 17-3 this fall playing at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles while leading the Falcons to an outright NACC championship. In singles play, she was 9-2 with a perfect 8-0 mark against NACC competition. Six of Budewitz's nine victories came in straight sets.
Budewitz and doubles partner
Ashley Samuta went 8-1 overall at the No. 1 spot, including 6-0 in league play. The tandem's record includes a trio of 8-0 victories (St. Norbert, Lakeland, Marian).
This is the fifth time a Falcon has been named NACC Women's Tennis Player of the Year, and the first since
Ashley Solberg in 2017. Budewitz picked up her second NACC major award. She was previously recognized as NACC Freshman of the Year after the 2018 season.
NACC Freshman of the Year --- Olivia Heling, Lakeland University
Heling went 11-11 overall to lead the Muskies. She posted a 4-7 mark in singles, all at the No. 1 spot, and went 2-6 in league play. Heling paired with
Kassidee Webb for doubles, posting a 7-4 record overall split between the No. 1 (1-1) and No. 2 (6-3) positions. The pair went 5-3 against NACC competition.
Heling is the first Muskie to be named NACC Freshman of the Year and the first to receive a NACC major award in women's tennis since 2013 when
Victoria Powelson was named Player of the Year and
Casey Carr was named Coach of the Year.
NACC Coaching Staff of the Year --- Concordia University Wisconsin (Steve Anschutz, head coach)
The Falcons went 9-2 this fall, overcoming an 0-2 start to post nine straight victories. CUW was a perfect 8-0 in league play to win the program's eighth NACC title and halt Edgewood's streak of consecutive NACC titles at four. Concordia Wisconsin outlasted Edgewood, 5-4, on Sept. 18 in a match that saw one doubles match decided by a tiebreaker and four of six singles matches extended to three sets.
The Falcons are led by head coach
Steve Anschutz and graduate assistant
Nolan Rademacher.
This is the fourth time Anschutz (or an Anschutz-led staff) has been recognized by the league's coaches. He won the award in 2015, 2016, and 2017.
Dave Mooney (2009) is the only other CUW coach to be named NACC Women's Tennis Coach of the Year.
