St. Norbert Edged by Wheaton, 75-71, in NCAA Second Round Matchup

WHEATON, Ill. (naccsports.org) --- St. Norbert College saw its 13-game winning streak snapped with a 75-71 loss to No. 9 Wheaton College Saturday in an NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Championship second-round game at King Arena.

After playing an even first 3:10, the host Thunder connected on four straight 3-pointers to jump out to a 20-8 lead. Aidan Harrington drained a triple of his own at the 12:16 mark to stop the run and set the Green Knights on a 15-0 run of their own. Harrington and Evan Glaser scored five points apiece during the stretch.

Wheaton's TJ Askew gave the hosts the lead back with back-to-back 3-pointers, but St. Norbert soon reassumed a one-point lead on a jumper by Garrett Grzesk with 5:11 to play. A Tyson Cruickshank 3-pointer was countered by a Harrington hook shot to tie the game at 31-31 with 4:12 to play.

The Thunder outscored the Green Knights, 10-5, down the stretch to take a 40-36 lead into the break.

St. Norbert opened the second half with a jumper in the paint from Evan Glaser, but the teams soon settled into a back-and-forth game. Wheaton was able to push the lead out to nine points on a Cruickshank jumper at the 12:34 mark. The Green Knights, however, were able to keep within contact of the Thunder.

St. Norbert remained in the game until the very end. Wheaton's Andrew Williams drained a pair of free throws with 50 seconds left in regulation to push the Thunder lead back to nine points at 72-63, but Grzesk responded with a 3-pointer on the Green Knights' next trip down the floor. After Wheaton missed the front end of a 1-and-1, Carter Gebler hit a quick 3 to cut the lead to just three with 30.1 seconds to play.

That lead held as the teams traded free throws, leaving St. Norbert with the ball and a three-point deficit with inside 10 seconds to play. Gebler and Michael Payant each had decent chances for game-tying 3-pointers but were unable to connect. One final free throw by TJ Askew provided the final margin.

St. Norbert (20-8) connected on 50 percent (25-of-50) of its shots from field compared to Wheaton's 45.5 percent (25-of-55), but the Thunder (24-4) drained 11 3-pointers to the Green Knights' six.

Evan Glaser led St. Norbert with a team-high 19 points on 7-of-12 shooting. He was also 5-of-9 at the charity stripe. Aidan Harrington added 14 points and five rebounds, while Gebler and Grzesk finished with 13 points and 12 points, respectively. Michael Payant just missed a double-double with nine points and eight rebounds.

Tyson Cruickshank led Wheaton with 26 points on 9-of-15 shooting with three 3-pointers and five rebounds. TJ Askew added a 14-point, 10-rebound double-double.
