MINNEAPOLIS/ST. PAUL, Minn. (naccsports.org) --- Taking to the pitch five miles apart in the Twin Cities, Edgewood University and Milwaukee School of Engineering ended up with contrasting results in their respective NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championship first-round matches.
Edgewood (16-2-2) defeated Gustavus Adolphus College, 3-0, while MSOE (14-6-3) fell to the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire by a 3-1 score. The Eagles advance to face No. 2-ranked Augsburg University at 1 p.m. CT Sunday, Nov. 16.
Edgewood 3:0 Gustavus Adolphus
Playing at Augsburg's Edor Nelson Field in Minneapolis, Edgewood withstood an early flurry of shots as Gustavus Adolphus launched four shots in the games first 11:30. The Eagles responded with four shots over the next seven minutes before breaking through on a goal by
Cristian Torres-Gale in the 21st minute off an assist from
Gabe Voung.
Edgewood extended the advantage to 2-0 just seven minutes later on a goal by
Liam Moreira. Moreira was set up by a corner kick from
Connor Gage, who was credited with an assist.
The Eagles outshot the Golden Gusties, 4-1, over the final 17 minutes of the half but couldn't add to their lead.

Maverick Van Laanen made two early saves in the first minute of the second half, after which the Eagles settled in defensively. Gustavus was held to just two more shots over the final 44 minutes - none on target.
Voung put the game out of reach in the 84th minute, making a run down the left side and sliding the ball past the Gusties goalkeeper and into the back of the net. Voung's goal was assisted by
Gavin Lewis.
Van Laanen posted four saves in his seventh shutout victory of the season.
The win is the first NCAA Divisoin III Championship win in program history and the first for a NACC program since 2016. That year, Benedictine advanced to the sectional round after regional wins over Carthage (2-1, 2OT) and UW-Whitewater (2-1).
UW-Eau Claire 3:1 MSOE
MSOE and UW-Eau Claire played to a scoreless first half at Macalester Stadium in St. Paul, with the Blugolds taking a 7-3 edge in shots. Goalkeepers
Christian Dershem of MSOE and Charlie Mroz of UW-Eau Claire were each credited with two saves in the period.
The Blugolds came out on the offensive to start the second half as Ramzi Ouro got off three shots in the first 3:05 - two missed the frame, while the third was saved by Dershem. UWEC finally broke through as Carson Kowalski scored off an assist from Ouro in the 56th minute, then extended the lead to 2-0 two minutes later as Tate McDermott scored off assists from Noah Malcook and Sean Redmond. The lead held until the 82nd minute when McDermott scored unassisted for his second goal of the day.
The Raiders avoided the shutout as
Joey Loduca found the back of the net in the game's final minute.
Braeden Roth and
Nico Picha were credited with assists.
UW-Eau Claire finished with a 14-8 edge in shots and a 7-4 advantage in shots on goal. Kowalski and Ouro were both credited with a team-high three shots.
Adrian Manchado was the only Raider with multiple shots, finishing with two.
