MEQUON, Wis. – The Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) stands with charter member Concordia University Wisconsin in mourning the passing of Director of Athletics Dr. Rob Barnhill.
Dr. Barnhill served as the fearless leader of the Concordia Wisconsin Department of Athletics beginning in the spring of 2001. During his tenure, he ushered in a remarkable period of growth across personnel, programs, and facilities, leaving a lasting legacy that will continue to shape CUW Athletics for generations.
Under Dr. Barnhill's leadership, the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics experienced significant expansion in staffing. At the time of his appointment, the department consisted of five full-time athletic positions. Today, CUW Athletics proudly supports 44 full-time coaches, administrators, and support staff. This growth enhanced daily student-athlete engagement, elevated professional standards across coaching staffs, and strengthened visibility and excellence in areas such as game management, athletic communications, and athletic training.
Facility development was another hallmark of Dr. Barnhill's vision. He worked closely with university leadership to plan and oversee major athletic construction projects, including the Sports and Fitness Facility, which houses athletic training rooms, Athletic Training Education Program classrooms and labs, the Hall of Fame, meeting rooms, locker rooms, coaches' offices, an aerobics studio, weight training areas, and cardiovascular exercise spaces. He was also instrumental in the development of Kapco Park, Fitting Field, Catalyst Park, Tomasini Stadium, and the Catalyst Training Center. These venues feature state-of-the-art turf surfaces designed to support competition in all weather conditions.
When Dr. Barnhill assumed leadership, CUW Athletics sponsored 19 varsity programs serving approximately 400 student-athletes. Under his guidance, the department grew to 32 teams with more than 700 student-athletes. He played a key role in the addition of numerous programs, including men's and women's hockey, men's and women's lacrosse, field hockey, men's volleyball, acrobatics and tumbling, ACHA Division II men's club hockey, shooting sports, triathlon, cheer, dance, and esports. During his tenure, Falcon teams captured multiple conference, regional, and national championships, while numerous student-athletes advanced to regional and national competition.
Dr. Barnhill began his career at Concordia Wisconsin as the offensive coordinator for the football program, a role he held for nine seasons. During that span, the Falcons compiled a 70–20 record, won four conference championships, and qualified for the NCAA Tournament three times. His offenses consistently ranked among conference and national leaders and produced CUW's all-time leading rusher, Immanuel Mills, and all-time leading scorer, John Collier. Prior to CUW, Dr. Barnhill spent 13 seasons as an assistant football coach at the University of South Dakota, Southwest Minnesota State University, Oklahoma Panhandle State University, and the University of Wisconsin–Stout.
Above all else, Rob was a devoted husband and father. He deeply loved his wife, Stephanie, and their two sons, Ty and Caden.
Dr. Rob Barnhill's impact on Concordia University Wisconsin extends far beyond wins, facilities, or programs. His leadership, vision, and care for student-athletes and staff will forever be part of the Falcon family.

His legacy will be reflected for years to come in the thousands of student-athletes whose lives were enriched by his leadership and in the countless colleagues who were fortunate to work alongside him.
