Initial 2019 NACC Weekly Gridiron Honors to Aurora's Zimbelman, BenU's Owens, Eureka's Kuhne

MILWAUKEE, Wis. (naccsports.org) --- Aurora University's Gavin Zimbelman (offense), Benedictine University's Jalaan Owens (defense), and Eureka College's Tanner Kuhne (special teams) have been named NACC Football Student-Athletes of the Week for games played Sept. 5-7, 2019, as selected by the league's sports information directors.

NACC Football Offensive Player of the Week

Gavin Zimbelman, Aurora University

Zimbelman, a junior quarterback from Manteno, Illinois, completed 33 of 52 passes for 497 yards and seven touchdowns in Aurora's 50-40 victory over No. 25 St. Norbert College. He set AU single-game records for touchdowns, passing yards, attempts, and completions and broke the NACC single-game record for touchdown passes. Zimbleman completed passes to nine different receivers including a 92-yard touchdown strike to Jacolby Maxwell late in the first quarter that set a new Aurora record for longest pass play from scrimmage.

NACC Football Defensive Player of the Week

Jalaan Owens, Benedictine University

Owens, a junior defensive back from Las Vegas, Nevada, recorded a pair of takeaways to lead a Benedictine defense that held Franklin's nationally top-ranked offense from a year ago over 100 yards below its average and over 18 points below its scoring average. He returned an interception 70 yards just before halftime to set up a field goal and recovered a fumble on the final play of the game to preserve a 26-25 victory. Owens finished the game with five tackles (three solo).

NACC Football Special Teams Player of the Week

Tanner Kuhne, Eureka College

Kuhne, a senior placekicker from Princeton, Illinois, was 6-for-6 on extra points and made a 21-yard run for a first down on a fake punt attempt in the second half in the Red Devils' 42-28 season-opening victory over Knox. He also racked up 112 punting yards on three punts.
