MILWAUKEE, Wis. (naccsports.org) --- Aurora University's Gavin Zimbelman (offense), Concordia University Wisconsin's Troy Stewart (defense) and Benedictine University's Tanner Mateus (special teams) have been named Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) Football Student-Athletes of the Week for games played Oct. 26, 2019, as selected by the league's sports information directors.
NACC Football Offensive Player of the Week
Gavin Zimbelman, Aurora University
Zimbelman, a junior quarterback from Manteno, Illinois, completed 23 of 34 passes for 327 yards and seven touchdowns in Aurora's 56-14 win over Rockford. He also ran for 61 yards on seven carries, averaging 8.7 yards per carry. Throwing for a NACC single-game-record seven scores for the fourth time this season, Zimbelman broke the NACC single-season mark for touchdown passes against the Regents. He now has 40, surpassing the previous mark of 34 set by Lakeland's Michael Whitley in 2015. Zimbelman finished the day breaking Aurora single-season marks for passing yards (2,362) and completions (177) and career marks for passing yards (5,235), attempts (689), completions (417) and touchdown passes (59).
This is Zimbelman's third NACC Football Student-Athlete of the Week honor this season.
NACC Football Defensive Player of the Week
Troy Stewart, Concordia University Wisconsin
Stewart, a junior linebacker from Trevor, Wisconsin, helped the Falcons defense limit the high-powered Concordia Chicago rushing attack, while shutting down the Cougars' passing game en route to a 34-15 victory. He returned an interception 15 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter and finished the game with six solo tackles, including a pair of sacks.
NACC Football Special Teams Player of the Week
Tanner Mateus, Benedictine University
Mateus, a freshman punter/placekicker from Belvidere, Illinois, booted an 18-yard field goal with just 1:42 to play to keep Benedictine undefeated in league play with a 17-14 win over Eureka. The kick came in harsh conditions with driving wind and pouring rain. Mateus was also 2-of-2 on point-after attempts and averaged 38 yards on four punts while placing two inside the Red Devils' 20-yard line.
This is Mateus' second NACC Football Student-Athlete of the Week honor this season.
