BenU's Garcia, Roberts Earn All-Region Honors, Qualify for Nationals

WINNECONNE, Wis. (naccsports.org) --- Benedictine University runners Marcos Garcia and Emma Roberts both posted top-15 finishes to lead all NACC competitors at the 2019 NCAA Division III Midwest Region Cross Country Championships Saturday at Lake Breeze Golf Course.

Men's Race
In the men's 8-kilometer race, Garcia broke out with the lead pack and held on to finish 10th overall with a 24:59.3 clocking. Concordia University Chicago's Thomas McNamara placed 39th overall with a time of 25:44.1, while Wisconsin Lutheran College's Chris Krahn gave the NACC three top-50 finishers with a 43rd-place finish (25:52.8).

University of Chicago junior Ryan Cutter won the regional title with a time of 24:32.6.

Seven NACC men's program's fielded complete teams, led by Milwaukee School of Engineering in 11th place with 357 points. Aurora University (592) placed 18th, followed by Illinois Institute of Technology in 24th (708). Edgewood College (28th place, 820), Wisconsin Lutheran (29th, 864), Concordia University Wisconsin (31st, 885) and Dominican University (35th, 1110) rounded out the NACC squads posting team scores.

North Central (47 points) and UW-La Crosse (89) finished first and second overall and locked up the two automatic qualifying spots for next weekend's NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships.

Women's Race
Like Garcia, Roberts went out quickly in the women's 6-kilometer race, sitting in the top-5 as the midpoint of the race. She fell off the pace late but still came across the line with a 14th-place time of 22:46.0. Molly Cullinane of Concordia Chicago was the NACC runner to finish, placing 43rd overall (23:24.0), while Edgewood's Clara Berning was next in 64th place (23:54.9).

Paige Lawler of Washington University in St. Louis won the regional title, stopping the clock in 21:53.0 to best the rest of the 257-runner field by 20 seconds.

Eight NACC women's programs fielded complete teams, led by Edgewood in 19th place with 550 points. Benedictine (705) finished 25th, just ahead of Concordia Chicago (26th, 738), Wisconsin Lutheran (27th, 758) and Concordia Wisconsin (28th, 784). Aurora (30th, 873), Dominican (31st, 897) and Mount Mary University (35th, 1113) rounded out the NACC squads posting team scores. 

Washington-St. Louis (37) and Chicago (66) secured the top two spots in the team standings to automatically qualify for next weekend's NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships. 

By finishing in the top 35, Garcia and Roberts also received all-region honors from the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). The duo also assured themselves of finishing in the top-7 individually among non-qualifying teams to automatically advance to the national meet next weekend at E.P. "Tom" Sawyer Park in Louisville, Kentucky.
