GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — A bid for a second-straight appearance in the sectional round of the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship fell just short for Illinois Institute of Technology, which dropped a 2-1 overtime decision to regional host Calvin University at Zuidema Field.
Illinois Tech (20-2-1) provided early pressure as Kayla Smith struck the right post with a shot in the fifth minute. Two minutes later, a shot off the foot of Allison Murray was on frame but was turned away by Calvin goalkeeper Kalex Dodge.
The Scarlet Hawks grabbed the lead in the 30th minute as Kelly Hitchcock found the back of the net off an assist from Smith. Despited continued offenisve efforts from both teams, Illinois Tech took the one-goal advantage into the halftime break.
Illinois Tech continued to launch shots towards the Calvin backline to start the second half, but Dodge was able to turn away offerings from Hannah Ramos, Smith, and Tvesa Vathulya.
The Knights (16-4-0) finally registered the equalizer in the 56th minute as Ellery Boeving scored off an assist from Mikaela Waroway.
Both teams had opportunities to grab the lead over the final half hour of regulation but both Dodge and Illinois Tech goalkeeper Kayla Hampton were able to stand up to the pressure and send the game to extra time.
Illinois Tech immediately applied pressure to start the extra session, securing a corner kick just 29 seconds in. The Scarlet Hawks attempted to capitalize on the opportunity, but a shot by Grace Yager was blocked by the Calvin defense. The ensuing possession resulted in a corner kick for the Knights at the other end of the field, but Calvin was likewise unable to convert.
After providing the assist on the equalizer earlier in the game, Waroway blasted a shot from the top of the box in the 96th minute that sailed high and just past the outstretched arms of Hampton to end the contest and send the Knights into the sectional round.
The Scarlet Hawks outshot the Knights, 20-8, and held a 10-5 edge in shots on goal, but Calvin was able to make the most of its limited opportunities offensively.
Waroway and Kiah Nichols each had two shots to lead Calvin, while six different Scarlet Hawks had mulitple shots. Kayla Smith led all players with five shots, including three on goal, while Hitchcock, Vathulya, and Taylor Hernandez each had two.
Dodge finished with nine saves in goal for Calvin, while Hampton was credited with three stops.
