CLAREMONT, Calif. – Facing a high level of competition at the NCAA Division III tournament the Edgewood College women's tennis team faced East Texas Baptist University, falling 4-0 in the first-round match at Pauley Tennis Complex. The Eagles finished the season 17-10 with their first trip to the national tournament since the 2018-19 season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Edgewood College struggled to keep pace with East Texas Baptist (9-6) in doubles play. The Tigers took No. 3 doubles by a 6-0 score, winning the doubles point with a 6-1 score at the No. 2 doubles slot.
- In singles play, Isabella Macquet gave ETBU a 2-0 lead with a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles over Sarah Emory.
- The third point came from a 6-1, 6-1 final at No. 1 singles between Monique Ybarra and Evelyn Taylor.
- The Tigers clinched the victory via a 6-2, 6-0 win over Marissa Light at No. 2 singles.
- Christina Ekkela battled for the Eagles at No. 5 singles. After dropping the first set 6-2, the junior bounced back with a 4-2 score before the match was ended due to the clinching point at No. 2 singles.
- Hattie Plenty was also making a run in the No. 3 singles slot when the match was finished. Plenty leading 4-3 in the second set after falling 6-3 in the first set.
