KOHLER, Wis. (naccsports.org) --- Concordia University Wisconsin defeated Edgewood College, 5-1, Sunday at SportCore to win its sixth Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) Women's Tennis Tournament crown in nine years.
The Falcons (21-6) jumped out to a 3-0 lead after doubles. Ricki Budewitz and Ashley Samuta posted an 8-2 win over Cecile Fuchs and Evelyn Taylor at the number one spot, while Sofia Buhr and Mallory Moen added an 8-4 victory over Maddy Coopmans and Jewel Lindwall at the number two spot. Mia Andrae and Peyton Morgan gave CUW the clean sweep with an 8-7 (4) win over Ellie Murphy and Madelyn Connaughty in the final doubles match.
As play shifted to singles, Concordia Wisconsin grabbed the first set on four of six courts. Morgan made it a 4-0 CUW lead with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Christina Ekkela on court six, while Murphy defeated Moen, 6-2, 6-4 on court four to get Edgewood (15-7) on the board.
Andrae secured the clinching team point with a 6-2, 7-6 (3) win over Coopmans on court five.
Of the abandoned matches, two courts were in - or about to start - third sets, while the third appeared to be headed in that direction.
The tournament victory gives Concordia Wisconsin the NACC's automatic berth in the 2024 NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championship. The full field and opening weekend assignments for the NCAA championship will be announced on an NCAA.com selection show at 11 a.m. CT Monday, May 6.
First, second and third round team competition will take place Friday, May 10 through Sunday, May 12, with the quarterfinals through national championship occurring May 20-28 at the Dwight Davis Memorial Tennis Center in St. Louis, Missouri.
