GENEVA, Ohio — Competing in the final race of the day, Aurora University's Deyanneira Colon Maldonado and Concordia University Wisconsin's Ainara Sainz De Rozas both secured first-team all-America honors with top-eight finishes in the 10,000-meter run at the 2025 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships at SPIRE Institute.
While SUNY Geneseo's Penelope Greene and Lewis and Clark's Riley Buese forged ahead and put considerable distance between themselves and the rest of the field en route to a 1-2 finish, Colon Maldonado cycled through a primary chase group made up of the next six runners. After taking turns towards the front of the group throughout the majority of the race, she struck out on her own at the 8,000-meter mark and held off the trio of Kate Sanderson of MIT, Rachel Brennan of Gordon (Mass.), and Gabriella McCarthy of SUNY Geneseo over the final five laps. Colon Maldonado crossed the line third overall in 34:45.80, setting new NACC, Aurora, and personal records in the process.
Sainz De Rozas started the race in the second chase group, sitting anywhere from 10th to 14th over the first 6,400 meters. At that point, she made her move to try and reach the tail end of the primary chase group. Sainz De Rozas ran in ninth place over the next five laps, eventually catching SUNY Geneseo's Lilly Fowler-Conner for eighth place with just under two laps to go. She stopped the clock in eighth place with a personal-best time of 34:57.75.
Both Colon Maldonado and Sainz De Rozas broke the old NACC all-time mark of 35:09.84 set by Edgewood's Ally Verbauwhede at the 2024 WashU Distance Carnival. The pair will also compete in Saturday's 5,000-meter run.
Elsewhere on the track, Milwaukee School of Engineering's Adam Shaw finished eighth in his preliminary heat of the 1,500-meter run with a time of 3:53.02, advancing to Saturday's final as a wild card with the eighth-best qualifying time.
Edgewood College's Kylee Doherty competed in both the discus throw and javelin throw Thursday. Facing rough weather conditions, she placed 14th in the discus throw (40.42 meters; 132-7) to pick up second-team all-America honors and was 21st in the javelin throw (35.46m; 116-4).
Aurora's Steven Tinsley earned second-team all-America honors in the discus throw with an 11th-place finish after posting a throw of 46.70 meters (153-2).
Tinsley will be one of three NACC student-athletes in competition Friday as he and St. Norbert College's Jacob Klitzke will compete in the shot put. Illinois Institute of Technology's Olivia Jameson will go after a national title in the women's high jump. Both competitions begin at 10:30 a.m. Central Time.
